Details

Medhas Muni Ashram, in Boalkhali, will not offer you innovative themed mandaps. However, it is unique for the age-old history that it owns. It allows visitors to discover the scope of finding inner peace in a place that is surrounded by natural beauty and tucked away from intrusive industrial development.

Location:

Medhas Muni Ashram is located at Karaldenga hill of Boalkhali Upazilla.

History:

The legend in Kalika Puran and Kamakhya Puran states that back in Satya Yuga (the age of truth), King Surath performed the first ever Durga Puja in spring at Medhas Muni Ashram after getting instructions from Sage Medhas. During 1900, Srimat Vedananda Swami rediscovered Medhas Muni Ashram, after years and years of meditation. After the rediscovery of the ashram, Medhash munir Ashram is considered to be one of the most important pilgrimage sites for devotees.

However, the Ashram was once again demolished when during the Liberation War in 1971. The Pakistani military turned the entire place into piles of ashes and destroyed the 6 ft tall deity. Right after Bangladesh's independence, there was no one to take care of this sacred ashram. With time and dedication of a newly formed Ashram committee, consisting of devotees, sages and pandits of the city, the ashram has once again regained its past grandeur.

Description:

The Ashram has 10 temples, including Chandi Temple, Shiva Temple, Sita Temple and Kali Temple. Walking about half kilometer from the main entrance of the Ashram, you will find the stairs. Once you climb the 140 stairs, the temple of Medhas Muni will be seen. After this temple, the main temple of Devi Chandi is located. There is Sita Pukur on one side and the fountain is behind the temple. There is a two-storey building for the sages, monks and pilgrims at the backside of the temple. This temple has been established on 69 acres of land. Every year Devi paksha (Fortnight of the Goddess) is started by Mahalaya in this temple.

Before the Ashram Gate, there is a Lotus Pond on the left side of the road along with the restroom. This area is also home to around 300,000 plants of various species, including Mahogany, Segun, Rain tree, Night-flowering Jasmine, Hasnahena, Karabi, Krishnachura, Kanakchura, Bamboo tree, Banana tree and many more, that the Ashram people have nurtured for decades. It is possible to relish the scenic views after climbing the top of the hill which is nearly 500 ft high. Up there everything is silent, except for the chirping of birds and reptiles revving up in their homes, along with devotional chants and tinkling sounds of the brass bells used during Puja. A quality time can be spent here by enjoying the rows of hills, Jhum cultivation in the hills, distant blurred natural views under the cloudy sky and cool breeze.
